Ion's chair broke...I wanted to play with it, too. [He pauses for a moment, thinking. If Ion's chair is broken, then does somebody have to carry him around? Or do they find a new chair? Or--oh hey there's a big stick under his bed he'd totally forgotten about that.]

...Is there a special way to punch people? Like how there's special ways to use a sword, and you have to practice and all of that. So maybe I could learn to fight like that, and then I could save the day and be a hero and ride a dragon and--

[He's been lifting the journal higher and higher over his head as he says this from his position on the floor, to the point that it's practically touching the floor--which is when it slips out of his fingers and falls shut. Oops.]

Well, if someone had tried to fight you, or you started wanting to hurt others, I would be a lot more concerned.

One would hope that Florian, and many others, don't go around intending to get into fights to begin with.

And that's a good answer. I don't plan to teach you if you're just going to go out and fight someone. It's no good if you do that.

No, it's not. This is more than just about punching people, you know. It's about knowing the right thing to do. And, what's right doesn't always involve using your fists.

You said you wanted to help people, right?

[He nods at that, without hesitation.]

I want to help. I don't like seeing people sad.

[Cliff smiled. Florian was definitely a good kid.]

The number one way to help people not be sad or hurt when something happens is to be able to protect yourself. If you can run? Do it. That's a rule. Got that?

[He couldn't help tilting his head a little at that.]

So running is more important than fighting?

[Cliff scratched his head. Nothing was worse than the scrutiny and judgement of a kid.]

No, protecting what you care about is more important. But, you can't even start to do that until you can protect yourself. For now, you've gotta run. One day you'll be able to, but it ain't gonna be quick.

Oh.

[He gave this a moment of thought before nodding his head.]

That makes sense. I don't want to get eaten or something, so I won't fight if I don't know how to yet.

[Florian really was a good kid. It was nice to know that he didn't have to worry about him making any bad choices.]

I believe he is saying you shouldn't fight even if you do know how, as long as it can be avoided.

That's right, and don't go around starting fights either. Sometimes the best fight that's won isn't one where any punches get thrown.
