[florian has been wandering around the village today, peeking in shops, attempting to climb trees, stalking bugs through the grass. the usual thing. he might have even run into one of you wonderful lucetians, it's a definite possibility.

it's been a really long time since he actually properly wrote in this journal thing of his, too, come to think of it - so sometime this afternoon, after a good few hours of running around, he sits down on the ground somewhere and asks an important question.]

I just thought of something...how do you know what you're not supposed to eat? Like, you can eat spinach but you shouldn't eat leaves.

...Do deer eat leaves? Maybe I can eat them after all...

Huh? Because, um... actually, I'm not sure exactly why not. I think they'll make you sick if you try.

Food can make you sick?...I guess that's kind of true.

Yeah, like how some things will go bad if you leave them out of the refrigerator for too long.

Maybe it's something like that? But it does seem kind of strange that we can eat stuff like lettuce and spinach, but not leaves.

Lettuce and spinach are kind of leaves too, right? Maybe we can only eat certain kinds of leaves.

I think so. I mean, they sure look like leaves to me. I wonder what the difference is?

...Maybe we can only eat leaves that are this green and not that green.

But doesn't lettuce come in all kinds of green?

It does?

Yeah, some lettuce is light green, and some lettuce is darker green. And then there's cabbage... some kinds of cabbage are even purple.

I never tried purple cabbage before...maybe I can find some in the store.

You can put it in salads just like lettuce. Um, if you like salads, I mean. I know not everyone does.

Salads are good! I like meat better but I can still eat salad.

I like meat better too, but salads can be nice in the summer. Actually, I like pretty much anything as long as there aren't too many herbs in it.

You don't like herbs?

Not really. They're way too bitter for my taste.

Hmm...I guess bitter's not very good. Sweet is a lot better.

I dunno, I think some things would taste kind of weird if they were sweet.

Like, um... well, like most salads. Some would be okay if they were sweet, but I think a lot of them would just taste weird.

Hmmm...I don't know. I think they'd be okay.

You really think so?

Yeah! I think they'd taste good.

Maybe I should try it some day...
