[florian has been wandering around the village today, peeking in shops, attempting to climb trees, stalking bugs through the grass. the usual thing. he might have even run into one of you wonderful lucetians, it's a definite possibility.

it's been a really long time since he actually properly wrote in this journal thing of his, too, come to think of it - so sometime this afternoon, after a good few hours of running around, he sits down on the ground somewhere and asks an important question.]

I just thought of something...how do you know what you're not supposed to eat? Like, you can eat spinach but you shouldn't eat leaves.

...Do deer eat leaves? Maybe I can eat them after all...

Instincts and well documented reasons, I assume. I mean, after all, we're taught our whole lives to be cautious of what we eat because some things are dangerous or don't taste good. Would you really eat something you're clueless on when it comes to it being edible?

We are? I wouldn't mind eating things I didn't know, if I was hungry and I didn't think they were dangerous.

Then I don't think you're going to make it in the wild. [ She couldn't believe what she was hearing, so she'll express it with a totally tactless comment. ] Just because it looks delicious, and smells delicious and maybe even tastes delicious doesn't mean it's not poisonous. Some poisonous things look completely harmless. You could get yourself killed with that line of thinking, or at least give yourself a seriously bad case of the runs. [ One time, at Ninja Camp, her partner Lee..... ]

I did okay before, though...[then again there probably isn't much poisonous food on a volcano. or much food in general.]

Then you got lucky. One time, on a mission, my teammate ate something that sort of looked like it was edible and he got a rash on the inside of his throat that was so bad, he needed medicine to be made just for his illness or else his body would start attacking himself. You'd be best to learn which plants are edible and which aren't, unless you want to take a risk like that.

......So how do I find out which plants are edible?

There should be books about it in the library. I know a little about survival, as does a couple of my colleagues if you're stuck. [ Being a ninja, you are expected to know which plants will most likely kill you if you ingest them. 8|a ]

Okay. I'll look for books then. [if only this was normal curriculum for two-year-olds.] Did you all learn from books too?

Duh, of course I learned these things from books. And other people, who learned these things from books or oral tradition before there were books to write in. [ What type of world doesn't have books?! ]

Do you even know what a book is? Do they exist where you're from?

I know what a book is! I've read them before too.

[ She just made this up. ] I have some friends that know a lot about plants that you can talk to, and you can observe which ones are safe to eat. I also know a little bit because, without me, my team would probably be dead by now because they confused carrots with hemlock. [ Oh yaaaay.... They aren't that bad, Tenten. ]

...Survival Scouts!! [whooooaaaa he gets to be in a team?!??!? this is super awesome.] So you have a whole team of people? Did they eat hemlock before? Is it bad? I'll be really great at observing, I promise!

Yeah.. I do. [ She actually doesn't but she doesn't want to break this kid's heart!!!!! ] I teach somethings at the academy from time to time. [ Weaponry training, mostly but this is still true. ] They haven't eaten hemlock before and hemlock is very bad. [ She pauses. ] It kills. [ Hemlock is bad mmkay. ]

Well, most people don't like dying so we'll do our best to avoid that. Okay? There's no way you'll be dying with my education!

Okay! Definitely no dying, that's good. This'll be really fun! [he cheers up pretty fast.]

Yes! It will. Do you stay in the village, or do you live somewhere else on the outskirts? [ She'll drop by and visit eventually with all types of plants plucked for his educational gain! ]

I live in a house! It's, um...across the bridge away from the stores. [florian's bad at giving directions, sadly.]

I think I might be able to find it. Anyways, class will happen here and there. I'll alert you the day before and check to make sure you're available. You need private tutoring to get you up to speed with the rest of my [ non-existent ] students.

Okay! I can do that. I'll learn really fast and then I can be with the other students! [those ones that exist somewhere!]
